Pianiste – Compositeur – Arrangeur

De formation universitaire en piano jazz et improvisation, compositeur et arrangeur, Martin Roussel est une figure bien connue du jazz au Québec, avec une centaine de compositions pour des films, des groupes musicaux et des évènements culturels.

Il fait en 2007 une première tournée en Europe (France, Allemagne) interprétant en duo avec le violoniste Steeve St-Pierre la musique d’un premier album (2004) Au delà du Réel, (Coup de Coeur Rideau/Roseq 2003), musique jouée tant au Québec qu’en Ontario et au Nouveau Brunswick. Il représente aussi en 2007 le Canada à Tokyo comme musicien jazz lors du Mois de la Francophonie.

Martin Roussel se produit une première fois au Festival international de jazz de Montréal en 1987, à Jazz à Vienne (France) en 2000, puis de nouveau au Festival de Montréal avec son quartet en 2013, jouant la musique de son second album Planétarium bien accueilli des critiques et du public. Il a aussi joué à maintes occasions au Festi Jazz international de Rimouski.

Il lance en 2019 son troisième album Pixel, avec MJ Cyr, textes et voix.

Au cours des cinq dernières années, Martin Roussel a donné plus de 30 concerts au Québec, en Europe (Belgique, France, Italie, Pologne) ainsi qu’au Japon, se produisant en duo, trio ou quartet lors de festivals et dans des clubs de renom.

Il a joué avec de nombreux musiciens canadiens comme Alain Caron, Lorraine Desmarais, Tiger Okoshi, Michel Cusson, Frédéric Alarie, Alexandre Côté, Alex Bellegarde, André Leroux, Michel Lambert…

Enseignant passionné, compositeur talentueux, lauréat de plusieurs prix au Québec depuis 2002, il enseigne et agit depuis 2010 comme coordonnateur au sein du programme jazz/pop du Cegep de Rimouski. Il est aussi chargé de cours à l’Université du Québec à Rimouski.

Il a été pendant une quinzaine d’années membre du jury du Grand Prix TD du Festival international de Jazz de Montréal ainsi que président du Festi Jazz international de Rimouski de 2011 à octobre 2015.

Pianist, composer and arranger, with a university degree as a jazz pianist and improvisor, Martin Roussel is a well-known jazz pianist in Quebec, with over a hundred compositions since 1997 for films, music groups and different cultural events.

He made his first european tour (France, Germany) in 2007 playing in duet the music of his debut album Au delà du Réel (2004) with the violonist Steeve St-Pierre. That same year he also represented Canada in Tokyo as a jazz pianist during the Mois de la Francophonie. The duo St-Pierre/Roussel previously toured in Quebec, New Brunswick and Ontario. Martin Roussel performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1987, at Jazz à Vienne (2000) and again at the Montreal Jazz Festival with his Quartet in 2013, playing the music of his second album Planetarium, well received by the critics and the public. He performed several times at the Festi Jazz international de Rimouski.

He just released his third album Pixel in 2019, with MJ Cyr, lyrics and lead singer.

Over the past five years, he has given more than thirty concerts in Quebec, Europe (Belgium, France, Italy, Poland) as well as in Japan, performing as a trio or quartet in festivals and well-known venues.

He played with many canadian jazzmen like Alain Caron, Lorraine Desmarais, Tiger Okoshi, Michel Cusson, Frédéric Alarie, Alexandre Côté, Alex Bellegarde, André Leroux, Michel Lambert…

A committed educator and talented composer, awarded several prizes in Quebec since 2002, he has been teaching and coordinating activities in the jazz/pop program at the Cegep de Rimouski since 2010. He is also teaching as a lecturer at the Université du Québec in Rimouski. He was a member of the jury for the Grand Prix TD of the Montreal Jazz Festival for some fifteen years. From 2011 to October 2015 he acted as president of the Festi Jazz International de Rimouski.
